Development On Poster

This is a further development in which I slightly edited to seek more conventions and to get a more professional approach.
I have enlarged the characters in order to make them more dominant and allowing the audience to get a full view of the main characters and this is a convention as well as an ideology which is expected on a film poster.
I decreased the colour within the background as it was not working for the genre and to get an image within the background I believe works much better for an overall message for the genre as it gives placement and attracts a wider audience rather than just having a plain background.
I have placed the font further down as there is much more space which allowed me to enlarged the titles as well as spread it further out so it would become much more apparent.
I have cut the female characters face of due to that within my trailer I would have the male acting but it would be a different female which I from a personal response believes works but it is not conventional as rom-coms followed by other genre intend to have the main characters shown on the poster.
The added text towards the bottom of the poster is conventional and works well and is something which I will not change although I am yet undecided whether to decrease the information as the space could have much better use.

Draft on poster

This is a draft of my film poster, I have created it on photoshop to get a modern effect. I have used a number of techniques and enhanced the lighting on the picture to get more attraction towards the characters. I have aimed to get conventions of a film poster by adding the information below as well as the specific logo to represent the companies which sponsor the film. This is not perfect as a lot more work needed to be done to make this much more conventional. To improve this poster the font needs to be much more bold to attractive to the viewer as well as the images need to be more enhanced to get a full view of the characters. The background is plain and need more detail and a better chose of colour which anchors the story line.

Analysis of posters

Within this assignment I will be designing a poster; this will involve me doing further research into existing products from previous rom-com movies. I will analyse both previous and present poster to get a full understanding of the conventions which are used, also the ideologies of the characters positions and the layouts which are used.

Firstly I will analyse pretty women, from the dress code we can see that it is in the past in comparison to the other poster. The font it bold and dominant which this poster, the colour scheme is basic and doesn’t have no complicated effects to add on the idea of modern. The layout seems basic and shows a strong message of the women being in control this is co notated through the photography. The tagline is basic and doesn’t have much complication to understand what the film is about. Conventions towards this poster are that the main stars are stated and the companies which support this film are also stated but within this poster it is done in a non conventional way which we are used to seeing now.
This film poster looks much more post modern to 'Pretty women' the font is much slimmer which co notates elegant and sophistication, a similarity within the two posters are that the characters which are placed within the same position, this is a convention I will use within my film poster. The description is placed towards the bottom of the page which is also a convention I will follow within my own production. The colour scheme seems to consist of three colours which is something I believe would be important as I don’t want my production to be overly bright as it may seem to amateur.
The dress codes of the characters shows this film is targeted at the mature audience.

Task 8: Final Proposal

Final Proposal

Within this assignment I decided to create a rom-com trailer which would also require a film magazine cover and a film poster. I have named my production ‘Cupid strikes again’ I chose this name as I think it best suits my story line and would be easy for my audience to remember.
In order for my trailer to get the out attention I would broadcast it within the cinema before present rom-com as my target audience would be present and from personal experience they would want to know what the next best movie would be to come and see. I would also broadcast my trailer on channel 4 as their target audience is 14 – 25 which it quite similar to the audience I am aiming to attract. Broadcasting on TV has become something of the past as I mainly see trailer within cinemas and on the internet.
Within this assignment I am required to attract a target audience towards my genre and who I believe would be interested within my trailer a long with a storyline which would also attract my target audience. I have chosen to target 16-20 year old which I found from my questionnaire. My story line is based upon a love story a female’s fantasy. I have chose to target my audience at group D1 and E as with a stereotype view these groups would be looking for the love story which will become make believe. I chose to target females as it would be easier to relate to and females will enjoy watching this trailer and want to come and watch the film.  Targeting the middle/working class would be ideal towards my trailer as it would give the audience the sense of belief.
For my genre I have chosen to a rom-com (romance and comedy) as these are my personal favourite films as well as from my audience research this was the most popular.
The style of my trailer will be conventional towards the typical rom-com trailer. The edits will switch from a combination of flashes and dissolves, the edits will have a fast pace as well as slow towards the edits as I will be showing a brief story line and the positives scenes within the film, this will allow the audience to understand the story line in more dept. The trailer will consist of medium long shots/ close ups/ establishing shots/ long shots/ shot reverse shots and tracking shots, I have chose to do these shots as they are conventional towards this genre as I found from my research. My aim is to communicate the ideologies of the stereotype female seeking love within an unusual way.

Task 6: Storyboards

How to storyboard a film sequence:-
-          Purpose photographs shots of film with key information
-          Storyboard allows directors to visualize films and allow camera person to understand how films are shot
-          Allows you to change elements if they don’t work visually before expensive filming process.

Frames should contain:-
-          Shot number – intended sequence can be followed
-          Framing – close ups, medium shot, long shot
-          Drawings – visualisation of what is happening
-          Action – brief description
-          Dialogue – single lines of dialogue
-          Sound effects – specific sounds, digetic, non digetic?

Each frame must have shot description such as the following abbreviations:-
-          H/A = high angle
-          L/A= low angle
-          P.O.V = point of view
-          2 Shot = two people in a shot
-          OTS = over the shoulder
-          Track/dolly = move camera on wheeled platform
-          Crab = sideways move
-          Pull focus = change what is in focus

k  This is a first draft of my storyboard as it wasnt conventional as this was produced upon the ideas within my head and somethin git just wanted to put down some ideas which i had. i have produced this idea and after doing some more research into trailers i will recreate something more conventional towards a rom-com trailer.

Results from questionnaire

Q1. In order for me to get an average statistic I asked 5 males and 5 females.

Q2. Within this question all the females I asked were 15-18 and 4 out of the 5 males were 15-18 and 1 out of the 5 was 19-22. I found that I should have maybe got more of an age range for my females as it won’t give me an average age for my target audience. My male age category gives m e two age groups which are mainly 15-18years old which again doesn’t give me an average age but again it makes it easier for me to have average age.

Q3. This question showed me that males and females took upon their stereotype with favourite genres as with the males 2 out of 5 chose thriller whereas 3 out of the 5 males chose horror but with the females 5 out of 5 comedy and 3 out of 5 chose to combine comedy with romance, whereas 1 out of 5 chose to combine comedy with thriller. With these results I got a conventional response.

Q4. These results showed me that 5 out of 10 people chose to have edits switched by fades, 4 out of 10 people chose to have the edits switched by flashes and 1 out of 10 people chose to have the screens switch to black when changing edits.

Q5. With this question 5 out of 10 people chose to have an open ending whereas 5 out of 10 chose to have the ending closed.

Q6. 8 out of 10 people decided that it is actors/actresses which attract people to look at a film poster and 2 out of 10 people decided it was colour which would get their attention more.

Q7. With this question the aim for me was to get more understanding of the type of film magazines people read as well as their conventions and design layouts. I found that not many people knew film magazines but did find empire and total film.

Q8.  With these results I wanted to get an idea of what my audience would prefer my actors/actresses to be. I found that 6 out of 10 people decided that characters should be 21-25 and 2 out of 10 people decided that character should be 16-20.

Q9. I found that 8 out 10 people wanted to see inter titles at the end of the trailer whereas 2 out of 10 decided it wasn’t a convention they wanted to see.

Q10. From this question I found that on an average people prefer to have music that just anchors the genre whereas I did get the minority who would want composed music or horror.

Q11. From this question I found that 7 out of 10 people would want both voice over and inter titles on the trailer whereas 3 out of 10 people would just prefer to have a voice over.

Analysis of music video Labrith – Let the sun shine

Within this assignment I analysed this music video as it with give me an idea of the codes and conventions used within existing products. I chose to analyse Labrith – let the sun shine his genre is RnB. I looked at the characteristics of this music video, the video seem to be filed within four different sets and within a studio which as audience we are constantly shown. Within this video the edits go fast and are majority straight cuts but we are also shown switch of edits by flashes. I also found at the beginning of the video the edits anchored the music well which is a main convention within this genre.
As the audience we are not shown a big performance we are simply shown a male singer, singing his song which shows a new artist within the industry as we are not placed in a recognisable building or recognisable surroundings.
This music video isn’t stereotyped to the music video if the present day as majority of music videos is simple dancing in big groups and being placed in massive buildings.

I looked at the conventions of camera angles, the video opens with a mid shot of the artist which I believe to be an important convention as it shows the audience who they are listening to and seems to be simple. As the video went on many mid/longs shots were used and had minimum close up.
The lighting within this music video seems to be studio lighting. It seemed to be flashes and incidental lighting (lamps, through doors).
The dress codes within this videa seems to be casual stereotype male and then we a shown the male in the suit which shows a sence of maturity. We are shown the stereotype of the famels roll within a music video as the female seems to be a bikini and she is simply there just for the auidence to looks at, the lighting is dim and get brighter with the flash to establish the artist and the women.

Analysis of Trailer - Ugly Truth July 2009
I had to analysed this trailer as I need to get a understand of conventions used within a trailer as well as the meaning the mise en scene the effects used to place the viewer in a place and the most important convention of a trailer is the music which it something I need to concentrate on and get the correct message across. Typical convention which I have seen from the start is a green screen which has websites on, sponsors, detail of contents as well as age requirements.
The trailer starts with an establishing shot of New York City this connotates that we are in a main city; professionals and our character are going to be middle aged.
To switch the scenes this trailers uses flashes this connotates telling a story time passing, we are then shown a scene from the film which introduces the one of the main characters (Katherine Heigl) we are taken straight to the main male character  (Gerard Butler) we enters the scenes popping his head around the corner. Mise en scene shows us that we are in an office (working environment) we are taking into the board room which shows the main female at the head of the table which connotates her power within the movie.
Music from the start is low key the use of individuals notes build us up to a story. It is used to simply introduce the characters and some background knowledge. Lighting is natural lighting the trailer always seem to be bright we are never shown a dark scene only when we are placed in a restaurant the romantic lighting I introduced.  This type of writing is a convention of a romcom trailer. We are almost given lessons within this trailer to how to win a guy over, this is then introduced by the upbeat music and the edits are then made quicker than a development of the main female character is introduced as a sexy women which we are shown by a long shot in which her dress is tight fitting and enhances figure and we are shown the idea that the male is training this women.

Throughout the trailer the dialogue is specific to wanting to make the audience laugh which I believe is a main convention as the audience is meant to see the comedy side which this film has to offer as well as the romance.

Over the shoulder shots are used to show conversation between the two characters as well as close up shots when having a conversation is to show the comical side of the film, shot reverse shots are also used to allow jokes to be told and again introduce the comical effect by the characters reaction.

The inter titles are introduced by a drop down effects and also shown in section to give the audience time to read and the colours used give an idea of unisex as both black and pink is used.

The title of the film is not shown till the end which is a main convention and within the trailer the use of imagery also shows the idea that this is a unisex film but has a main target audience to the females.

Analysis of 500 days of summer trailer

Begins with mid shot of main character this is showing them having a conversation the idea of strangers as they have social connection which is shown from his face.
We get digetic sound of music from head phones this may enhance the idea of youth or characters who are within their 20’s as the style of dress and the fact the character is listening to music.
We are shown pictres from their childhood which could suggest this has always been their dream or could be giving us a better undersatinging with the charcters and the idea we are not meant to hate them this enhances the idea of it being in the romance genre rather than the horror/thriller or sci fi genre.
We get a voice over telling us a brief story, the voice over is male this be an convention towards voice over. We get told it is a love story ‘boy meets girl’  but the get contradiction with the voice over  ‘you should know this is not a love story’ which causing confusion, what is this story about but from the shots we see this is actually a love story but maybe just from the male perspective. No fast edits are used 1 minute into trailer; there is a slow pace towards this trailer which isn’t conventional within this genre.
We get Inter titles ‘day 1’ this letting us know we are about to get better understanding of what we are going to be shown. Straight shots are used to switch edits which again isn’t conventional towards the genre. Establishing shots/ close ups and mid shots are all used. Towards the end a dissolve to black screen get used to switch edits and introduce inter titles. At the end of trailer music get louder and edits become more faster this again isn’t conventional as in other trailer to music is much more important and a lot more shots and edits are used. Finally the trailer shows this isn’t a conventional trailer, the stereotype isn’t used for the women wanting love but it is actually the male trying to find love and hoping to find it within his daily life.
